Electric Fence Testers

Electric Fence Voltage Testers.

Common types available.

1. Audible Voltage Tester.
2. Neon Light Voltage Tester.
3. LED Voltage Tester.
4. Digital Voltage Tester.

Testing your electric fence is an essential part of installing and maintaining your system, whether you are keeping predators out or your livestock in, a faulty fence will render it ineffective.
These 4 types of electric fence voltage tester each have their own advantages and vary greatly in price.

1. Audible Voltage Tester.

The most basic type if electric fence tester is both a popular and cheap way to test your electric fence without having to touch it. These devices are usually proximity testers in that they will give an audible warning when they are placed near to an electric fence line with sufficient voltage being pulsed through it. This type of tester should only be used to check if a fence line is live and not for any type of accurate reading.

2. Neon Lamp Voltage Tester.

Neon lamp testers are also cheap and have one or more lamps that will light up when a voltage is flowing through it. Mutliple lamp versions will give a reasonably accurate reading of the voltage on the fence. The more lamps that light the higher the voltage on the fence.
This type will usually have an earth probe that must be pushed into the ground to enable an accurate reading to be taken. This type of tester can be difficult to read in bright daylight.

3. LED Voltage Tester.

LED technology and the associated electronics have now made it possible to have a small battery powered tester that is easy to use, accurate and easily read in daylight. The Hotline KV10 is a 'keyfob' sized LED tester that has 10 coloured LEDs enabling the reading of fence voltages from 1000 to 10,000 volts. This type of tester is usually self-earthing so there is no need for an earth probe connection.

4. Digital Voltage Tester.

Digital electric fence voltage testers are the most accurate but also the most expensive. These can be either self-earthing or have an earth probe attached. As these do not rely on lamps of any type they are easy to read. These are often used by professional installers or by those testing fences often and requiring the most reliable readings.
