    Connie's Coop - Part 1

The Beginning... Welcome to our hen journey!

When I was 7 or 8 I got my first hens - 4 Rhode Island Red bantams and a cockerel.  I loved them.  They were beautiful little bantams and hardy ... they needed to be as after a week or so in the hen house they were released on to the farm.  We had lots of hens who free ranged around the farm.  They were the yard scavengers - and we fed them too.  The Rhode Island Reds settled in well and were around for years and years.  Since then I have had

  8. Electric Fence Earthing (Grounding)

    Electric Fence Earthing (Grounding)

    Earthing/Grounding of electric fence systems.

Every electric fence relies on being insulated from the ground for it’s effectiveness.

The fence energiser sends a high voltage electric pulse onto the fence but that pulse does not go anywhere unless something ‘shorts’ it to the ground (or earth).  That is why plastic insulators or posts are used, to ensure that the fence is insulated from the ground.

When an animal touches the fence it shorts the fence, providing a route for the pulse to the ground

  9. Using Electric Fencing Polycord/Polywire

    Using Electric Fencing Polycord/Polywire

Electric fencing ‘cord’, or ‘polycord’ as it is sometimes referred to, is a type of fencing conductor made from polyethylene strands and thin stainless steel or tinned copper wires and is used for containing many types of stock animals and poultry and for deterring various pests.
